Traditionally woven in the Caucasus, this example is from Iran (Persia). Soumak Rugs are flatwoven, like the more familiar Kilims. As in pile rugs, the design is built up horizontally, line by line. The face of a Soumak can look almost like embroidery, with a intricacy of design reminiscent of needlepoint. And also as in needlepoint, the front of a Soumak is a smooth and intricate work of art while the back is a tangle of loose threads. Woven in a rainbow of colors, this Soumak uses simple geometric forms to build up an extremely detailed design. On close inspection, no single element is overly complex- only in the overall presentation does the true sophistication of this Soumak emerge. This stunning design is reproduced by license from Arthur T. Gregorian Oriental Rugs located in "A little part of Persia in Newton Lower Falls, Massachusetts".
